The Brookings Institute is a research institute that focuses on Economic Studies, Foreign Policy, Global Economy and Development, Governance Studies, and Metropolitan Policy. They offer student internships for pay, academic credit and external sponsorship.

The Center for Global Development

Washington D.C.

The Center for Global Development works to reduce global poverty and inequality through research and active engagement with the policy community. The center is currently seeking a global health intern for communication and data analysis/compilation. The internship is paid.

Central Intelligence Agency Internship

Washington D.C.

The CIA offers internship and career opportunities including an undergraduate co-op program, an undergraduate internship program, an undergraduate scholarship program, a graduate studies program and a graduate scholarship program. Students have the opportunity to apply to many different positions such as but not limited to analysis, clandestine services, cyber security and graphic, media, publishing and photography.

Department of Defense

The Department of Defense offers an internship program, a recent graduates program and a Presidential Management Fellows program for students interested in internship opportunities. The programs are designed to give students real-world experience in different disciplines within the DoD.

Department of Defense: Defense Security Service

The Defense Security Service offers paid and unpaid internship opportunities in which students may gain real-life work experience in fields relevant to both the student and the Defense Security Service.

Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security works to prevent terrorism, secure borders, enforce and administer immigration laws, safeguard cyberspace and ensure resilience to disasters. There are multiple scholarship, fellowship and internship opportunities in fields such as public affairs, law enforcement, intelligence and analysis, legal and health and science.

Defense Intelligence Agency

The DIA offers many varying internship opportunities including a summer intern program, an undergraduate training assistance program, an academic semester internship program and a national security education program. Different internship positions have different required focuses and locations.

Department of State

Washington D.C.

The U.S. Department of State has an unpaid internship program and a paid pathways program for students that allow students to gain experience in foreign affairs. Students have the opportunity to do these internships in Washington D.C. or at an international office abroad.

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Washington D.C.

The FBI offers two internship programs. One is called the Honors Internship Program, a paid 10 week summer program, and the other is the Volunteer Internship Program, an unpaid 10 week summer program. All majors are encouraged to apply, as there are a vast amount of positions within the Bureau.

Institute for Policy Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is a community of scholars and organizers that prioritize peace, justice and the environment on a national and global scale. It is the oldest think tank in the U.S. that promotes progressive thought. It offers a 14-week fall program with mentorship, training and networking experience. It offers both paid and unpaid opportunities. There are many different internships to apply for within the institute.

National Nuclear Security Administration

Congress established the NNSA in 2000 as an organization within the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the country’s nuclear proliferation, naval reactor programs and nuclear weapons. They offer a Student Temporary Employment Program and a Student Career Experience Program in addition to a Minority Serving Institution Internship Program in which students can apply to.

National Security Agency

The NSA offers internships, a co-op program, and scholarships for a wide variety of majors. Students can apply for positions in the Summer Language Program, the Computer Science Intern Program, the HR Intern Program and more.

USAID

Washington D.C.

USAID interns work in fields such as economic growth, agriculture, education, health, environment, democracy and governance and more with responsibilities like researching, writing program memoranda and drafting documents. Paid and unpaid internships are offered throughout the year.

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement

ICE focuses on immigration enforcement, preventing terrorism and combating illegal movement of people and trade. They offer internships in which students can experience life in the world of homeland security work.

United States Institute of Peace

Washington D.C.

USIP is the independent, nonpartisan conflict management center created by Congress to prevent and mitigate international conflict without resorting to violence. They offer program assistant positions to students and graduates.

The World Bank

Washington D.C.

The World Bank offers the Bank Internship, in which students studying economics, finance, human development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social science (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment and private sector development are recommended. If selected, students will work towards the World Bank goal of reducing poverty and supporting development on a global scale.
